I had the honor of speaking at a convening at the White House. Yes, THE White House. I will admit I wasn’t certain the call from the Executive Office of the President asking me to participate in this event was legit, but I pretty quickly realized they weren’t kidding! 😀 The convening was held on December 3, 2015 entitled “A Cycle of Incarceration: Prison, Debt, and Bail Practices.” It was a truly bipartisan event with speakers ranging from Attorney General Loretta Lynch and Sr. White House Advisor Valerie Jarrett to Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform. There were many amazing speakers as well as some incredible people in attendance. This was one of my proudest days. In small part because I was invited to speak at this event, but in large part because we were having a conversation about bail practices and pretrial justice in the White House – something I never thought would happen when I started out on my journey for pretrial justice 25 years ago. Below is a link that will take you directly to my panel but you can also view any part of the amazing day.
